Herrick takes the image of his woody becoming a vine from the ancient Greek of Anakreon, but the wonderful poise of this poem is Herrick's own. (A stock is the wooden pole supporting a vine.) Rarely has a work of art so effectively, so smilingly, corrected a sexual fantasy with reality.
